Episode 31: James P. Borgstede, MD, FACR

Leading with Impact

Headshot of Dr. Borgstede

February 18, 2021

Join us for an inspirational conversation with James P. Borgstede, MD, FACR, professor and vice chairman of radiology at the University of Colorado, as he shares his remarkable journey from paperboy in Edwardsville, IL (which financed the purchase of an engagement ring!) to his impressive distinction as being the only person to have served as past president of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the International Society of Radiology (ISR), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American Board of Radiology (ABR), the Colorado Physician Health Program and the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners.

In this episode, he shares how he found balance early in his career while leading a private practice while rising through the ranks in his academic role at the University of Colorado, what led him to pursue an MRI fellowship at the University of San Diego after 28 years in practice, and his approach to managing a team (hint: seek diverse perspectives.)

The conversation explores how his remarkably diverse and impactful slate of leadership roles within the field of radiology evolved out of a sense of responsibility, the important role mentors have played in his career, what drives him to be an enthusiastic supporter of international radiology and how he led with tremendous flexibility and innovation to deliver the 2020 RSNA meeting entirely virtually.

You won’t want to miss this very special episode.

Did You Know?

Dr. Borgstede has been married for 51 years to the love of his life, Martha. They met in 6th grade Sunday school class.

Together, they have two daughters, Kim and Laura. Kim is a preschool teacher by education and has home schooled the Borgstede’s 3 granddaughters Holly, Paige, and Karley. Their other daughter, Laura, was a bioengineer with the orthopedic prosthesis maker Zimmer in their research division. She now has her doctorate in physical therapy and works at Childrens Hospital of Colorado. Dr. Borgstede and Martha have a pet border collie named Angus.

Dr. Borgstede enjoys spending time with his family. In the winter he enjoys skiing with family. He plays tennis moderately well, golfs poorly but enjoys the outdoors, runs regularly, and loves to hike. Climbing one of Colorado’s 14,000 ft peaks each year is an enjoyable goal.

Dr. Borgestede and Martha love to travel, though it has been curtailed with the pandemic. They’ve never found a place that isn’t interesting. Every place has its special memories.

Dr. Borgstede’s first career plan was professional baseball—then was cut from his little league team so considered alternative means of employment. He always wanted to be a physician from the time he was a child. First, it was family medicine and then radiology.

Dr. Borgstede has never met a food he didn’t like! And he’s traveled a lot and eaten a lot of different things. The best restaurant in the whole world is Ski Tip Lodge in Keystone Colorado. It offers gourmet dining secluded at the base of Keystone Ski area. The restaurant was started more than a century ago as a stagecoach stop and later was the lodge at the original ski area in Summit County Colorado. It’s rustic but elegant. Dr. Borgstede and his wife try to take guests there whenever they can.
