In this episode, Pek-Lan Khong, MBBS, MD, FRCR, clinical professor and head of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Hong Kong, discusses her early years growing up in Singapore, her first experiences as a leader, and what led her to choose radiology training at the University of Hong Kong. She shares her journey from faculty, to assistant Dean for External Affairs and Fundraising to becoming head of the Department of Radiology where she successfully executed her vision to grow the profile of the department. You will hear how she supported the opening of the 2,000 bed University of Hong Kong Shenzhen hospital in 2012 while serving as the founding chief of service for its department of medical imaging, her insights into the cultural differences and financial nuances between healthcare in Hong Kong and mainland China and the efforts underway in Hong Kong to control the COVID-19 virus. She discusses the important role mentors have played in her career and what excites her most about the field of radiology.

Pek-Lan Khong, MBBS, MD, FRCR

Dr. Pek-Lan Khong is Clinical Professor of Radiology and the Head of Department of Diagnostic Radiology, The University of Hong Kong since 2008. She serves as Honorary Consultant Radiologist at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Children’s Hospital. She was also Chief-of-Service of the Department of Medical Imaging, The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital, PRC, between 2012-2017 from the founding of the hospital.

Dr. Khong received her medical degree from The National University of Singapore, and subsequently trained in Radiology obtaining her specialist degrees in Hong Kong (FHKCR, FHKAM) and the United Kingdom (FRCR), and her post-graduate Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) from The University of Hong Kong.

Did you know?

Dr. Khong is single and has two furry kids in the form of terrier crosses rescued from the SPCA. Outside of work, she is happy to try anything that catches her fancy. She keeps active with a personal trainer and any cardio workout that isn’t too monotonous, including spin, hike, and tennis. She’s recently started playing the piano again and enjoys attending concerts. She loves wine exploring the various styles and grape varieties. And finally, some fine dining that goes with the fine wines. Dr. Khong says she eats anything, except for creepy crawlies, and enjoys sampling the breadth and depth of world cuisines. On rainy days, she enjoys quiet conversations, a good read, and chilling out at home.

Prior to going into radiology, Dr. Khong considered doing surgery which was part of the reason she moved to Hong Kong, but ultimately decided on radiology and says it is the absolute best career decision she’s made.
