Florence: My Favorite Travel Place

By Ramon J. Garcia, MD

Florence, Italy! Is there any more to say?

My wife and I have traveled to Florence probably 20 times in the last 10 to 15 years. Our friends at home wonder why we always return to the same place instead of trying somewhere new. The answer is both easy and not so easy.

The easy answer is — Florence!

The not-so-easy answer is we fell in love with Florence when the old city cast a magical spell on us. If you haven’t been there, it’s hard to understand. In spite of all that is said about it — the haughty Florentians, the noisy streets, the subpar cooling or heating, we’ll gladly take the bad with all the fabulous that this city has to offer.

We’ve walked all over central Florence countless times and still find new things every time. We can’t find a bad meal in the restaurants. And it would be redundant to mention the great museums and sights.

I love to get up early when the city is still sleeping and go for a jog across the Ponte Vecchio to Piazzale Michelangelo and back to the center. We have met many interesting, good people, whom we’ve befriended over the years.

Yes, we have enjoyed Florence immensely, and we hope to return as soon as possible!
