Flowing Water and Rejuvenation

J. John Straub, MD

The sound and sight of moving water holds an inherent restorative quality that draws many of us, consciously or unconsciously, to seek it out. In recent years I’ve found the sight and sound of waterfalls, roaring rapids or pounding surf to be mesmerizing. Maybe this is because I was too busy when I was younger, or maybe it’s because my aging eyes and ears are now more easily sensitized!

Whatever the cause, I am rejuvenated by each exposure. I know I’m not the only one who feels transformed, as I’ve never encountered a disappointed or angry human being while at a waterfall. And heaven knows, there are plenty of those around.

My photographs may fall short of conveying the real-life sensation, but if they encourage just a few of my fellow retirees to redirect some of those professionally honed observational skills in this direction, then I believe they’ve served a good purpose.
