CMS Establishes 2021 MIPS Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Exemption

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has established an automatic exemption for eligible clinicians in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) that have been affected by natural disasters. Clinicians in CMS-designated areas affected by an extreme and uncontrollable circumstance will be automatically identified based on their address. CMS recently announced that those affected by Hurricane Ida are included in this exemption.

The exemption is only for clinicians participating in MIPS as individuals. Exemptions will not be given automatically for groups. Groups that seek an exemption must apply to receive one by Dec. 31.
