On Thursday, March 18, the United States Senate voted 50-49 in favor of confirming California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to be the next Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Becerra becomes the first Latino to head the agency.
In assuming the leadership role at one of the Federal Government’s biggest agencies, Secretary Becerra faces immediate and ongoing challenges, including the daunting task of continuing to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in the wake of a poor performance by the United States in comparison to other industrialized nations.
