2022 MIPS Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Applications Due Dec. 31

Participants in the 2022 Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) have until Dec. 31 to submit applications to request reweighting of performance categories due to extreme and uncontrollable circumstances (EUC). The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is continuing to accept EUC exemptions due to the ongoing COVID-19 emergency, however an application must be submitted to CMS in order to be considered for reweighting or exemption. In previous years this EUC exemption was automatically applied to all MIPS-eligible clinicians who did not report any performance categories.

CMS recently announced that an automatic EUC exemption will be applied to non-reporting MIPS clinicians in areas of New Mexico affected by recent wildfires. These clinicians will automatically be identified and receive a neutral payment adjustment, unless they choose to submit data for two or more MIPS performance categories.
