CMS Provides APM Performance Pathways Updates

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has provided updates to the Alternative Payment Model (APM) Performance Pathway (APP) quality requirements. The APP is a Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) reporting and scoring pathway for MIPS-eligible clinicians who also participate in MIPS APMs. The APP is designed to reduce reporting burdens, create new scoring opportunities for participants in MIPS APMs and encourage participation in APMs.

For performance year 2022, individuals, groups and APM Entities — including non-Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) — have one collection type option to use for their APP quality submissions. Shared savings program ACOs can use Option 1 or Option 2.

If you participate at this level...

You can use this collection type set...

Individual, Group, APM Entity (SSP ACO and non-SSP ACO)

Option 1

  • eCQM/MIPS CQM (3 measures).
  • CAHPS for MIPS.
  • Administrative Claims (2 measures).

APM Entity (SSP ACOs only)

Option 2

  • CMS Web Interface (10 measures).
  • CAHPS for MIPS.
  • Administrative Claims (2 measures).

Participants must collect measure data for the 12-month performance period on one of the two sets of pre-determined quality measures. The option two quality measure set is only for Shared Savings Program ACOs.
