Focus on Scope: State Chapters Can Benefit From ACRA Scope of Practice Fund

The spotlight is shining brightly on state legislatures and the American College of Radiology Association® (ACRA®) presents a perfect opportunity for state radiological chapters to amplify their message before lawmakers and policymakers, patients, and other stakeholders about scope of practice issues.

Created in 2021, the Scope of Practice (SOP) Fund helps state chapters proactively educate lawmakers about the potential threat scope expansion presents to patient safety.

Five state chapters received ACRA SOP funding during the inaugural year — Kansas, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. State chapters used their funds in a variety of ways, including an advocacy campaign by the Wisconsin Radiological Society that ultimately helped secure a veto of dangerous scope of practice legislation that would have granted advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) independent practice.

It never is too early to start planning for your state’s legislative session or to educate your state lawmakers about the importance of a radiologist and radiologist-led teams. The ACRA invites state radiological chapters currently or potentially facing a scope battle in 2023 to apply for SOP fund grant.

If you have any questions about the SOP fund, please contact Eugenia Brandt, American College of Radiology® (ACR®) Senior Government Affairs Director or Dillon Harp, ACR Senior State Government Relations Specialist.
