The Wisconsin Senate and Assembly held hearings July 29 on related bills that would expand the scope of practice of advanced practice registered nurses (APRN). The Senate considered Senate Bill 394, the APRN modernization Action, and the Assembly held a hearing on Assembly Bill 396.
The bills would provide a separate license for APRNs; all currently practicing APRNs would be able to acquire license. The bills also would repeal the nurse midwife act and generally authorizes APRNs to issue prescription orders.
The measure is opposed by many physician societies, including the Wisconsin Medical Society and the Wisconsin Radiological Society.
