Norman E. “Ned” Sharpless, MD, announced April 4 that he is stepping down as Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) effective April 29. Dr. Sharpless has held the position since 2017, except for a short period in 2019 when he served as acting Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
