PIER Internship

Rising second-year medical students can apply for the Pipeline Initiative for the Enrichment of Radiology (PIER) internship, a program offered across the U.S. that helps talented medical students who have historically not pursued careers in imaging to explore radiology.

Applications for the PIER Internship are now closed and will reopen in Fall 2026.

The Pipeline Initiative for the Enrichment of Radiology (PIER) is a nationally recognized program designed to introduce talented medical students to the field of radiology and radiation oncology early in their training.

PIER offers rising second-year medical students a comprehensive six to eight-week summer experience that includes:
Expert-led lectures and seminars by leading radiologists and guest speakers
One-on-one mentorship from dedicated preceptors
Hands-on exposure to radiographic imaging across various modalities
In-depth case discussions with faculty and peers
Development of a Case-in-Point submission and presentation

Throughout the program, students also engage in academic research and collaborate with their preceptors to prepare a Case-in-Point submission and an oral presentation to be presented at the National Medical Association (NMA) Annual Meeting.

This immersive experience helps participants build core skills in medical imaging, intervention and treatment, critical thinking, and patient communication. PIER has proven instrumental in preparing students for residency programs in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, and radiation oncology, with many alumni successfully matching into competitive programs across the country.

The internship is open to first-year medical students at institutions across the U.S. seeking an opportunity to explore the radiology specialty and engage in research.

The PIER internship is open to first-year medical students in the U.S. Application requirements include:

a letter of good standing
resume/curriculum vitae
two letters of recommendation
ACR membership (medical students join free)

The internship culminates with a presentation of the students’ research of their Case in Point projects to the Radiology/Radiation Oncology Section at the annual meeting of the National Medical Association. The PIER Program provides a stipend for selected scholars during their Summer Internship, as well as continued mentorship and support throughout the years leading to your radiology residency application.

Since 2020, PIER has been offered as a fully virtual program, enabling broader participation and greater accessibility for students nationwide. What began as a five-student, in-person pilot has grown significantly to accommodate up to 40 students each year. This growth reflects the increasing interest in radiology among medical students and the success of the program in delivering a high-quality, engaging, and impactful experience. As the only radiology medical student summer internship developed by the American College of Radiology, ACR PIER offers premier training in Diagnostic Radiology, Interventional Radiology and Radiation Oncology as well as medical physics and non-interpretive skills and tips to prepare you for a successful application for residency.

By offering early exposure and structured support, PIER plays a key role in building a strong, well-prepared radiology workforce and promoting excellence in patient care.

Medical StudentTravel Scholarship

The College is proud to offer a maximum of 10 scholarships to medical students enrolled in U.S. or Canadian approved programs to support attendance at the ACR annual meeting.

Applications are now closed.

Medical students in a U.S. or Canadian approved program and who have an interest in becoming a diagnostic radiologist, interventional radiologist, radiation oncologist or nuclear medicine physician are eligible to apply.

Application requirements include:

ACR Membership (medical students join free).
Students must be in their first, second, or third year of medical school, or in a research year, and not yet matched into a residency program. They may only receive the scholarship once.
Resume/curriculum vitae.
Awardees must register for the meeting and attend pre-determined activities, including MSS sessions, Council meetings and the RFS meetings with a required attendance of a minimum of three days. Awardees will also participate in the meeting mentor program, complete pre- and post-conference surveys and provide a post-meeting write-up on their experience. This may be used in ACR publications and marketing materials.

Medical Physics Graduate Student Scholarship

The ACR offers a travel scholarship for graduate students in medical physics to attend the ACR annual meeting.

Applications for the 2026 scholarship are now closed.

Eligibility requirements:

Be enrolled in a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program. Students may only receive the scholarship once.
Become an ACR Member-in-Training.
Complete pre- and post-conference surveys.
Provide a post-meeting write-up on their experience (content from post-meeting write-ups may be used in ACR publications and marketing materials).
Submit a W-9 form for expense reimbursement.
We recommend having a professional portrait available so that the selected candidate(s) may be featured in ACR social media posts without unnecessary delay.

Applicants are required to provide an audio file .wav, .mp3, or .m4 explaining why they want to attend the meeting in two minutes or less, as well as summarize their graduate research in 500 words or less. The summary should be easily understood by readers with no background knowledge; submissions will be judged on both content and comprehensibility. Top submissions may be featured in the ACR Bulletin.

Medical Student Membership FAQ

Medical students in accredited U.S. and Canadian medical schools are eligible for complimentary ACR Member-In-Training (MIT) membership.

Medical students who attend a four year or greater medical school outside of the United States and Canada are eligible for ACR International MIT membership.

No, enrollment verification is not necessary if you are a student in good standing.

Medical student members have access to many ACR benefits, including:

Educational Resources: Utilize a wealth of radiology curriculums, case studies, webinars, and online tools to enhance your learning.
Networking Opportunities: Connect with over 3,000 medical students and professionals through the Medical Student Section (MSS) and local ACR chapters. Attend chapter meetings to identify potential mentors.
CV Building: Contribute to ACR publications like the Bulletin, VOR Blog, Member Update and DSI Blog. Volunteer to moderate MSS webinars or Journal Clubs. Help create radiology resources for students interested in radiology like yourself.
Leadership Roles: Develop your leadership skills with the Medical Student Section (MSS) Steering Committee and subcommittees, focusing on areas such as education, advocacy, and more.
Annual Meeting Participation: Attend the ACR Annual Meeting to connect with radiology residents, attendings and med students who are also interested in pursuing radiology. Apply for the Medical Student Scholarship to receive funding for your travel to Washington, DC.

Yes, once an ACR member completes their training (which includes residency and fellowship), they will transition into a dues-paying ACR member. Member dues increase incrementally during the first four years of practice – members in their first year of practice pay just $77 for ACR dues. Note: ACR membership runs from January 1 to December 31. The first ACR dues payment after completing training will be owed for the following year beginning in January.

International MIT medical students’ dues are $138 per year until they complete training. Upon completion of training, International Member dues are $391 per year.

Member-In-Training membership will be renewed automatically throughout the remainder of their medical school, residency, and/or fellowship training.

You can still apply for membership; in fact, we encourage you to apply! It’s free, and learning more about the profession will help you decide if radiology is the field for you. Even if it is not, as a referring physician, you will likely have to order imaging for patients, and we want you to learn as much as possible about radiology while you are in medical school.

Medical students who transition from a medical educational program to an approved radiology residency program will continue with their complimentary membership for the duration of their time in residency.

International MITs who continue their training outside the U.S. or Canada will remain qualified for International MIT membership status throughout their international residency and fellowship.

International medical graduates who match and begin their U.S. residency program will qualify for complimentary MIT membership.

International medical students at a four year or greater medical school outside of the United States and Canada, or international medical school graduates who are currently certified by ECFMG and are waiting to match into a U.S. residency program in a radiologic discipline including nuclear medicine and are in good ethical standing in their respective countries are eligible to apply for International Member-In-Training membership.
