FACR Application Guidance

FACR is a prestigious membership award conferred by the Board of Chancellors. Learn more about the achievement and application process with our frequently asked questions.

Begin your FACR Application

The minimum eligibility requirement is 10 cumulative post-training ACR membership years. Members-in-training and retired members are not eligible to apply.

An FACR candidate must have achieved at least one criterion from any of the domains from the FACR Nomination Criteria:

  • Service to ACR, chapter and/or organized radiology/medicine at national, regional, state or local levels.
  • Teaching in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology and/or medical physics.
  • Research and/or literature contributions in radiology, whether scientific or clinical.

You are encouraged to review the FACR Guidelines, ACR Bylaws and Nomination Criteria prior to beginning an application. Seek guidance from the fellowship chair of your chapter to review current achievements and submit an application. Military members may use the Military Nomination Criteria and contact FACR staff for guidance.

At least two current ACR Fellows must endorse your FACR application. Any ACR Fellow may serve as an endorser if that Fellow has direct knowledge of your achievements and can attest to your professionalism. Only one endorser may be from your same local business entity.

Refer to the All ACR Fellows list to identify potential endorsers. You will need the email addresses from the ACR Fellow's membership profile. Use the ACR Membership Directory to identify the correct email address to send a system email to your potential endorsers.

Chapters designate their members’ candidate application submission deadlines. View your chapter's submission deadline and submit a complete application, including endorsement letters, before that date.

You will not be permitted to submit an FACR application after your chapter's designated application submission deadline.

Chapter officers review candidate-submitted applications after the candidate submission deadline. Chapter leaders (President, Immediate Past President, President Elect, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Fellowship Chair) receive an email with their application review assignments on the day after the chapter-designated candidate application submission deadline.

All chapter recommendations must be entered into the application platform no later than June 30, 2025. Late applications will not be accepted from candidates or chapter reviewers.

Members who apply in 2025 will receive mailed and emailed notifications by late October 2025. Those selected by the ACR Board of Chancellors to become ACR Fellows will participate in the May 3, 2026, convocation in Washington, DC, unless BOC approval is deferred to a subsequent convocation year.

Attendance at the convocation during the Annual Meeting is necessary for the honor to be conferred.

When inducted at the convocation, the new Fellows attest to the ACR Fellowship Pledge:

In accepting fellowship in the American College of Radiology, an organization that seeks to exemplify and to develop the highest traditions of the profession of medicine, I reaffirm my determination to place the welfare of my patients before all other considerations in my practice of Radiology.

I will continue:

  • To uphold the ethical standards promulgated by the American College of Radiology;
  • To strive constantly to advance my knowledge;
  • To provide my services freely to those unable to pay for them;
  • To be sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the society in which I live and practice;
  • To help advance the status of radiology through teaching of those desirous of learning;
  • To conduct myself with professionalism in all my practice and interpersonal relations.

Finally, I pledge myself to work to the best of my abilities to advance and extend the influence and service of the American College of Radiology.

FACR History

In 1923, the College founders intended this membership award to be conferred on a small and elite group of ACR Fellows. The following year, the founders inducted seven Fellows at the first convocation in 1924. The ACR Bylaws approved that year limited future ACR Fellow membership to 100 with a maximum of five new Fellows accepted annually.

By 1931, the College was being encouraged to enlarge its membership to expand its projects. In 1935, the new category of member was created for diplomates of the American Board of Radiology, and the induction of Fellows was retained for those members who had attained eminence in the specialty.

Currently, members who meet the minimum eligibility to apply based upon cumulative post-training membership years and at least one of the FACR nomination criteria are eligible to submit an FACR application for review.

Members who have been elected to become Fellows attest to a fellowship pledge. The member receives the honor from the ACR Board of Chancellors at the convocation ceremony during the Annual Meeting. The following text reflects the attestation that is signed by the member and revered by the College in recognition of the significant achievements of the Fellow.
