An Indispensable Leader

March 23, 2023

In this episode, host, Geoffrey Rubin, MD, MBA, FACR, talks with Lauren Parks Nicola, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Triad Radiology Associates in Winston Salem, NC, Chair of Radiology at Forsyth Medical Center, and Chief Medical Officer of Strategic Radiology’s Patient Safety Organization (PSO).

After completing medical school at the Duke University School of Medicine (graduating first in her class!), and her Diagnostic Radiology Residency and Fellowship in Pediatric Radiology at Wake Forest University, she worked as an academic pediatric radiologist, later shifting to private practice in 2015, initiating a remarkable ascent to the top leadership position in her 50-radiologist practice and a burgeoning portfolio of leadership responsibilities both locally and nationally.

Within the American College of Radiology (ACR), she serves on the Board of Chancellors as the Chair of the Commission on Ultrasound, as a member of the Commission on Economics, she chairs the MACRA and the Reimbursement committees and serves as a member of the AI Advisory Group and Advisor to the AMA-RUC (Relative Value Scale Update Committee).

From growing up as an identical twin in a small town in North Carolina and working in her family’s restaurant (listen in to find out why soft serve ice cream makes her sweat!) to her interest in economics and health policy (yes, she read 3,000 pages of legislation in three days!), to embodying the principles that guide her leadership, Dr. Nicola is truly an indispensable leader. And through it all, she and her radiologist husband, Gregory Nicola, MD, FACR, are raising five daughters and prioritizing family dinners.

Did You Know?

I'm married to Greg Nicola, who is chair of the ACR economics commission and the smartest person I know. We enjoy lively dinner conversations about health policy and the ever-exciting economic landscape of radiology.

Who am I kidding? Most dinner conversations are monopolized by our 5 daughters, who keep us on our toes at all times. We had one beta fish, who recently passed away after a truly supernatural lifespan of 6 years (I was promised by the pet store worker it would be 12-18 months max).

When not working, we love travelling, hiking, and playing tennis. We've had a blast on recent trips to Patagonia, Peru, Ecuador, and many of the US National Parks.

I have an identical twin sister, who is also a physician.
