Over the past decade, the ACR’s Radiology Leadership Institute® (RLI) Leadership Summit has established itself as an important reminder of how the world of radiology is much larger than the workstation and the Dictaphone.

Each year, this collaboration between the ACR and the top-ranked Babson College provides insight and education on relevant and impactful topics such as building productive teams, scenario planning, design thinking and factors of self-awareness that impact leadership success. Over three days, we learn from expert Babson business school professors about how these issues are impacting the field of radiology today and how we can expect them to influence our careers in the future.

Participants come from across the country, reflecting a breadth of practice settings in both urban and rural, academic, private practice and hybrid environments, all to share different perspectives and learn from one another.

As has been the case for the past five years, an additional dedicated Resident and Young Physician Leadership Program has accompanied the Summit, allowing targeted content for the attendees in the earliest stages of their careers. This free session is open even to those unable to attend the remainder of the Summit and allows an opportunity to learn valuable career skills from luminaries in the field of radiology.

Participants come from across the country, reflecting a breadth of practice settings in both urban and rural, academic, private practice and hybrid environments, all to share different perspectives and learn from one another.

Like the Summit itself, the Resident and Young Physician Leadership Program covers different content each year, chosen from a mix of both topical and timeless business management and leadership content. Previous years have offered a wide range of topics including AI, design thinking, leadership development, the art of influence and growing as a leader from early on in your career. Most radiology trainees in the U.S. likely receive little to no formal instruction in these topics, but this kind of training substantially affects the profession and our ability to chart our own course through the marketplace and the competitive landscape.

The 2023 Summit focused on three salient topics that are critical right now to the field of radiology: the increasing involvement of private equity in the radiology marketplace, creation of value within an organization and principles of negotiation. The Resident and Young Physician Leadership Program dove even deeper into the topic of negotiation, with didactics and discussions led by Lawrence R. “Larry” Muroff, MD, FACR, Ellen Chung, MD, and Frank J. Lexa, MD, MBA, FACR. That programming centered on negotiating and leading from the perspective of a trainee or a junior member of a group.

On top of all these high-yield interactive lectures, the Summit also featured case-based breakout sessions moderated by Muroff and Geoffrey D. Rubin, MD, MBA, FACR, that allowed participants to brainstorm and problem-solve together through real-life scenarios in both the private practice and academic worlds. In between sessions, there were plenty of opportunities to network with radiology group leaders from across the country.

Though many of us may not see such topics displaying themselves proudly during the daily interpretation of diagnostic imaging, these forces shape how we do our jobs, the professional relationships we forge and the way we will face opportunities and challenges in the future. This foundational education is critical to making informed choices, securing our future and participating as educated advocates for our patients.

We hope to see you at the 2024 RLI Leadership Summit so you can take advantage of this opportunity as well!
