Sept. 4, 2024
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Information Notice 2024-04 Aug. 9, to inform licensees of recent reported medical events that involved the administration of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals.

The notice is intended to notify licensed facilities and personnel of 29 medical events from federal fiscal year 2021 through 2023, caused primarily by lack of confirmation, validation or implementation of written directives. It does not provide information regarding the specialties/professions or institutions involved; however, it does mention that several of these medical events occurred due to coordination or communication issues with departments other than the department that administered the radiopharmaceutical.

Moving forward, medical licensees and authorized personnel that offer radiopharmaceutical therapies should review the notice and apply lessons learned to inter- and intra-departmental training and protocols to avoid similar medical events in the future.

If you have questions or would like more information, contact Michael Peters, American College of Radiology® Senior Director of Government Affairs.
