Guest speakers at a panel on artificial intelligence at the 2025 Data Science Summit

The 2025 SIIM-ACR Data Science Summit, cohosted with the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM), held May 20, brought together leaders in radiology, informatics and healthcare artificial intelligence to explore how AI is reshaping clinical practice. Po-Hao (Howard) Chen, MD, MBA, Chair of the American College of Radiology® (ACR®) Informatics Advisory Council, and Woojin Kim, MD, ACR Data Science Institute® (DSI) Chief Medical Officer, chaired the summit that focused on actionable insights, regulatory clarity and the infrastructure needed to sustainably implement AI in real-world radiology settings.

Dr. Chen, who is vice chair of AI at the Cleveland Clinic, delivered a forward-looking talk about AI’s role in transforming diagnostic operations based on his experience leading multi-site implementations. Another highlight of the summit was a session related to regulatory and legislative issues related to imaging AI, featuring a powerhouse panel: Keith J. Dreyer, DO, PhD, FACR, ACR DSI Chief Data Science Officer, Bernardo Bizzo, MD, PhD, ACR DSI Associate Chief Science Officer, and Nina Kottler, MD, MS, FSIIM, moderated by Christoph Wald, MD, PhD, MBA, FACR, Vice Chair, ACR Board of Chancellors and Chair, ACR Commission on Informatics. The session provided timely updates about the rapidly evolving regulatory environment and underscored the need for transparent, standards-based implementation of AI in clinical imaging.

The panel discussed ARCH-AI (ACR Recognized Center for Healthcare AI), the first national recognition program for radiology practices using imaging AI. Designed to support best practices and ensure AI is deployed safely, the ARCH-AI program highlights infrastructure, governance and performance monitoring — critical components for long-term success in AI adoption. The summit reaffirmed that successful AI adoption in radiology demands not just technology, but governance, education and collaboration. ARCH-AI represents a major step in formalizing those efforts and supporting practices nationwide.
