Read moreThe American College of Radiology® (ACR®) appointed Bruce Haffty, MD, FACR, FASTRO, FASCO, chief medical officer for Radiation Oncology Research. Haffty will collaborate with ACR staff, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group Foundation scientific leadership, and industry partners to advance practice changing clinical research trials in radiation oncology.
“Dr. Haffty’s history of strong leadership in radiation oncology and clinical trials will be instrumental in shaping the future of ACR radiation therapy research initiatives and improving outcomes for patients worldwide,” said ACR CEO Dana H. Smetherman, MD, MPH, MBA, FACR.
Haffty joins ACR while continuing to serve as associate vice chancellor for cancer programs at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, and professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson and New Jersey Medical School.
“Dr. Haffty brings a strategic vision, deep clinical expertise and proven leadership that will strengthen the College’s ability to work with NCI, academic and industry partners to develop and manage high impact radiation oncology clinical trials leading to new standards of care,” said Etta D. Pisano, MD, FACR, ACR chief research officer.
A nationally recognized leader in the field, Haffty is a former president and board chair of the Radiological Society of North America and the American Society for Radiation Oncology, and a former president of the American Board of Radiology, the American Radium Society and the Association of Directors of Radiation Oncology Programs.
“I am honored and thrilled to take on this important role at ACR to help in advancing clinical trials that move our specialty forward and improving health care for the patients we serve,” said Haffty.
He has served in leadership roles for the Alliance Clinical Trials Group, as co-investigator or co-principal investigator on multiple clinical trials in the national cooperative groups and authored numerous peer reviewed publications and scientific presentations.
Haffty earned his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine and holds a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
