The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) today announced its ACRedit Plus and National Radiology Data Registry (NRDR®) platforms have earned certified status by HITRUST for information security.
HITRUST r2 Certification demonstrates that the organization’s ACRedit Plus and NRDR platforms have met demanding regulatory compliance and industry-defined requirements and is appropriately managing risk. This achievement places ACR in an elite group of organizations worldwide that have earned this certification. By including federal and state regulations, standards, and frameworks and incorporating a risk-based approach, the HITRUST Assurance Program helps organizations address security and data protection challenges through a comprehensive and flexible framework of prescriptive and scalable security controls.
“Achieving HITRUST r2 Certification is a significant milestone that affirms our disciplined approach to security, privacy, and risk management,” said ACR CEO Dana Smetherman, MD, MPH, MBA, FACR. “As the nation’s oldest and most widely recognized medical imaging accrediting body and a pioneer in radiology data registries, protecting sensitive information is fundamental to our mission of advancing radiological care for patients and society. This certification provides independent assurance to our customers and demonstrates to partners, regulators, and stakeholders that trust, accountability, and operational excellence are embedded in how we operate. Ultimately, this certification is not about meeting a standard; it is about earning and sustaining the confidence placed in us as responsible stewards of healthcare data.”
ACR currently provides accreditation services to more than 37,000 entities and over 50,000 units across nine imaging modalities, three designation programs, and one Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence program. Over 3,800 facilities currently participate in NRDR across eight unique quality registries, including Assess-AI, the first quality registry in AI that provides algorithm performance monitoring in clinical practice.
ACR's accreditation programs set the national standard for imaging quality and patient safety, while NRDR empowers practices with benchmarking and data-driven insights to advance performance and value-based care.
“The HITRUST Assurance Program is rigorous and reliable because of the comprehensiveness of control requirements, depth of review, and consistency of oversight,” said Bimal Sheth, Executive Vice President, Standards Development & Assurance Operations at HITRUST. “HITRUST r2 Certification demonstrates ACR is taking the most proactive approach to cybersecurity, data protection, and risk management.”
