ACR® applauds the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for adding a member seat for interventional radiology (IR) to its Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes (ACMUI). NRC is accepting nominations for this role until Dec. 28.

IR expertise on ACMUI will help the agency address licensing, authorized user training and experience criteria, among other issues involving sealed sources or unsealed material administrations. In an April letter supporting an IR seat, ACR noted a growing number of radionuclide therapies that are in the developmental and translational pipeline involving direct intratumoral or image guided injection.

Additionally, Y-90 microsphere brachytherapy remains a key area of NRC regulatory interest. For example, NRC included numerous “microsource brachytherapy” proposals that would affect Y-90 and IR practice in its recent “Reducing Barriers to Medical Use Licensing” proposed rule.

For questions about NRC advocacy or the newly created IR seat on ACMUI, contact Michael Peters, ACR Senior Director, Government Affairs, or Lindsay Robbins, Regulatory Policy Specialist.
