ACR Responds to NRC Medical Use Proposals

ACR^® submitted comments to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) about a proposed rule that would update medical use licensing regulations in 10 CFR Part 35. The College also provided feedback regarding a draft guidance revision related to the release of patients who have been administered radioactive material.

The latest proposals are part of a broader NRC effort to update its regulations. ACR previously submitted comments about related NRC proposals involving security, materials licensing and radiation protection.

The medical use proposed rule addresses several subtopics, including training and experience requirements for authorized users, residency-based pathways to eligibility, medical event reporting, emerging medical technologies, and licensing requirements, among other issues. In its comments, ACR offered recommendations to enhance the proposed rule and support safe, effective patient care.

The patient release draft guidance provides voluntary ways in which medical licensees could comply with recently proposed changes to the criteria for determining radiation dose to caregivers and other members of the public from released patients. ACR recommended that NRC seek additional public comment about the revised guidance after the underlying proposed rule is finalized.
