ACR DSI — Responsible AI in Radiology
Two back-to-back sessions from the ACR Data Science Institute® dive into how AI is being implemented and monitored in real-world radiology:
- Blazing the Trail for Responsible Use of AI in Radiology will feature ARCH-AI, the first national quality assurance program for AI in radiology. Learn how your site can earn recognition by meeting standards for governance, safety and performance tracking.
- Monitoring AI Performance will showcase Assess-AI, the first AI quality registry, which will help practices monitor AI performance, benchmark nationally and support AI governance with real data

ARCH-AI
The ACR Recognized Center for Healthcare-AI (ARCH-AI) is the first national artificial intelligence quality assurance program. ARCH-AI is a program based on best practices for AI use in imaging interpretation that helps ensure radiology facilities are using AI safely and effectively. Become an ARCH-AI recognized site
Assess-AI
Assess-AI is the first nationwide quality registry for AI that provides algorithm performance monitoring in clinical practice by capturing real-world data in a clinical setting. Join Assess-AI
ACR AI-LAB
The ACR Data Science Institute® has developed the ACR AI-LAB®, a data science toolkit designed to democratize AI by empowering radiologists to develop algorithms at their own institutions, using their own patient data, to meet their own clinical needs.
Build essential skills in advocacy to help shape the future of radiology. Brief lessons in advocacy, part of the ACR Advocacy Curriculum, are now available. Developed by member volunteers, these mini lessons provide guidance on effective caucusing, how to speak to a legislator, how to give an elevator pitch and the anatomy of a resolution. Additional lessons in five key areas, including leadership, communication, personal branding, media/social media and legislative/policy are in development. Learn more
The RADVOCATE Leader Certificate is intended for ACR members interested in strengthening their understanding and expertise in critical components of advocacy. To complete the program, ACR members must earn 20 credits within two years of registration, which can be earned by completing programs and/or criteria from all aspects of Government Relations: State, RADPAC®, RAN, Regulatory and Economics. Upon completion of the program, members will receive recognition at the ACR Annual Meeting.
If you are interested in getting involved through the RAN or in advocacy, please contact Melody Ballesteros, Assistant Director of Government Relations. If you are interested in registering for the RADVOCATE Leader Certificate, please do so now.
Our Neiman News quarterly newsletter brings you the latest updates from Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute®. The latest issue highlights mobile mammography boosting breast cancer screening, Medicaid reimbursement challenges, workforce trends and more!

Policy Impact of HPI Research: Key HPI-published findings tied to health policy change.
Medicare coverage for CT colonography screening — CMS CY2025 final rule
- Key Takeaway From HPI Research
- Medicare patients in high-income areas receive CTC at 5.7 times the rate of those in low-income areas.
No Surprises Act: Court Wins TMA I-IV & 2024 Appeals Court
- Key Takeaway From HPI Research
- Physicians lose money when challenging insurer payments via IDR.
- Only 1% of radiology claims are out-of-network.
- The No Surprises Act may threaten in-network payments.
CMS MIPS scoring of topped-out measures: flat rate benchmark replaces 7-point scoring cap for 4 radiology measures — CMS CY2025 final rule
- Key Takeaway From HPI Research
- Radiologists in radiology-only practices score lower in MIPS; Those in multispecialty practices score higher by reporting other specialty measures.
Rad Oncology Case Rate (ROCR) Value-Based Program Act of 2024
- Key Takeaway from HPI Research
- Proposed Radiation Oncology Bundled Payments Produce Medicare Savings with Goal of Stabilizing Reimbursement.
The Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act of 2025 (HR 879): Bipartisan legislation reintroduced to Congress to support physicians and protect access to care for Medicare beneficiaries by reversing payment cuts and incorporating inflationary adjustment.
- Key Takeaway from HPI Research
- The study found that physician reimbursement per Medicare patient decreased 2.3% between 2005 and 2021 when accounting for inflation, despite a concurrent increase of almost 46% in physician services to each patient.
A study by HPI found that to make up for inflation and conversion factor cuts, physicians would have to deliver over 50% more services per Medicare patient in 2021 to maintain the same per beneficiary reimbursement as in 2005.
HPI studies projected the ongoing radiologist shortage in the U.S. and the impact of various levers to reduce imaging demand or grow the radiologist workforce. Modest estimates indicated the gap in supply and demand is not likely to get better, or worse. Both the number of radiologists and imaging utilization are projected to grow by around 25% by 2055.
A study by HPI found that the number of practices with a radiologist decreased by 13% over the past 10 years, while the number of radiologists increased 17%.Non-physician Providers/Scope of Practice
A study by HPI found non-physician practitioners’ share of imaging interpretation in office-based practices increased 117%, from almost 3% of Medicare imaging studies in 2013 to almost 6% in 2022.A study by HPI found that radiologists reporting individually in MIPS underperformed, as did those in small practices. Individual radiologists were 7.4 times more likely to fail to achieve “exceptional” status than group-reporting radiologists, indicating potential disadvantage in the MIPS program.
