The newest module, “CPI Gastrointestinal Tract Radiology Module 2026,” is chaired by Avneesh Gupta, MD, clinical professor of radiology at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. ACR CPI staff spoke with Gupta about the module and his hopes for learners.
Radiology sits at the critical intersection of anatomy, pathology and technology. What drew me to the field was the unique opportunity to act as the “doctor’s doctor” — to solve diagnostic puzzles that directly dictate the course of patient care. I’ve always been fascinated by the visual language of medicine; the ability to look inside the human body and apply objective data to improve clinical outcomes is a privilege that keeps the work intellectually stimulating every single day.
This module focuses on the nuances of abdominal imaging that are encountered daily in both academic and private practice settings. In an era where imaging volume is increasing, maintaining diagnostic precision while managing efficiency is paramount. We’ve designed these cases to mirror real-world scenarios, emphasizing findings that have significant management implications. By mastering these cases, practitioners can enhance their confidence in providing actionable reports that clearly communicate the urgency and nature of the findings to referring clinicians.
Learners should balance the evolution toward CT and MRI with a mastery of foundational X-ray and fluoroscopy, which remain uniquely vital for specific pathologies. While cross-sectional imaging excels at staging, fluoroscopy provides the real-time, dynamic data essential for various conditions affecting the GI tract. The challenge for today’s radiologist is to use advanced cross-sectional tools for comprehensive staging while retaining the expertise to leverage X-ray and fluoroscopy when needed.
