With 134 images, 50 questions and extensive teaching points, radiologists and trainees at all levels can learn from the newest CPI module.

The ACR Continuous Professional Improvement (CPI) program provides the most current, content-rich casework directly from present-day practices of leading subspecialists. More than 200 distinguished experts create CPI self-assessments in essential areas of ABR-required study. The program’s editors-in-chief, editors, reviewers, authors and staff are passionate about professional development and the importance of continuous education in radiology.
The newest module, CPI Breast Imaging 2026, is chaired by Gary J. Whitman, MD, FACR, director of research in the department of breast imaging and division of diagnostic imaging at The University of Texas (UT) MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Marion E. Scoggins, MD, associate professor of breast imaging at UT Southwestern Medical Center. This edition also incorporates the BI-RADS® v2025 Manual, ensuring the module reflects the most current standardized breast-imaging terminology and reporting updates. ACR CPI staff spoke with Whitman and Scoggins about their thoughts on the module and their hopes for learners.
Whitman: I like that radiology involves nearly every facet of medicine. I enjoy the problem-solving component of radiology, and I like that the field includes pure diagnostic work as well as procedural work. In addition, I enjoy interacting with patients, other physicians, technologists and sonographers.
I like that radiology involves nearly every facet of medicine. I enjoy the problem-solving component of radiology, and I like that the field includes pure diagnostic work as well as procedural work.
Scoggins: I was drawn to radiology because I believed it would be an intellectually challenging and rewarding field of work with a range of opportunities for professional growth. The work-life balance that radiology allows was also very important to me.
Whitman and Scoggins: This module is designed to review key concepts in contemporary clinical radiology practice while building on BI-RADS® fundamentals and addressing the educational needs of learners at all levels. It may serve as a refresher or as a vehicle to learn new material, including commonly encountered clinical scenarios in screening and diagnostic settings as well as newer modalities and unusual diagnoses. This module includes screening and diagnostic mammography cases, as well as biopsy cases using imaging guidance (ultrasound-guided biopsies, MRI-guided biopsies and stereotactic biopsies), and image-guided wire and seed placements.
Whitman and Scoggins: We think that learners should pay attention to the correlation among imaging modalities, imaging-pathology correlation, appropriate practice approaches and some newer modalities, including breast MRI and contrast-enhanced mammography. This module employs the latest BI-RADS® v2025 Manual, enabling learners to become familiar with the updated BI-RADS lexicon and classification terms with image-rich rationales. We believe that our learners will find these cases helpful, especially those who may not have had the chance to see these exams in routine clinical practice.
Whitman: We hope that you will enjoy this module and gain a greater understanding of practical, clinical breast imaging. We thank you for participating in this learning experience, and we welcome your feedback. We hope that the module can help you in learning new material as well as in reviewing established concepts.
Scoggins: We are grateful to our new learners and to those who are returning for giving us the opportunity to expand or reinforce their breast-imaging knowledge. We hope that the information that our learners can take from the module will foster growth and positively impact patient care.
