Matching into radiology residency is a tremendous achievement. The years of hard work that brought you through medical school and the residency application process culminate in this defining moment. Match Day shapes the next phase of your training and sets the stage for your career as a physician. While it’s a time to celebrate, it’s also a time to look ahead. Here’s what to expect — and how to prepare — for the journey to come.
On my first day of radiology residency, I walked into the reading room excited, nervous and convinced that everyone else knew exactly what they were doing. I quickly learned two things:
From day one, clinicians, technologists and patients will look to you for guidance. Whether you’re interacting with patients during procedures or fielding calls from clinicians, preparation builds confidence.
Tools like the ACR Appropriateness Criteria® quickly become essential as you learn to function as a consultant, not just an image interpreter.
Radiation and contrast safety are especially high yield. Resources like the ACR Manual on Contrast Media, Image Wisely® and RadiologyInfo.org will help you answer questions confidently and consistently.
Stepping out of the reading room is essential to gain experience and establish yourself in the various avenues within radiology. Getting involved is easy as there are numerous opportunities at both the local and national level. Get involved in your state ACR chapter and find positions or committees that are available for volunteers. Programs like the ACR Radiology Leadership Institute® also provide early exposure to leadership, advocacy and practice management.
As you move from Match Day into residency, know that you’re not doing this alone. The ACR RFS is here to support you through the next step in your exciting journey with opportunities to engage with and support the radiology profession by way of advocacy efforts, educational opportunities, policy implementation and more. As you prepare for year one, I encourage you to explore RFS Resident Resources like our Guide to Year One of Radiology Residency to help you hit the ground running.
Congratulations on your Match, #FutureRadRes! We’re excited to welcome you as you take this next step toward becoming a radiologist.
