The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) and several specialty societies submitted code change proposals at the May American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedure Terminology (CPT®) Editorial Panel meeting. The hybrid meeting was the second of three meetings to update codes for the 2027 CPT code cycle.

ACR, in collaboration with the Radiological Society of North America, American Roentgen Ray Society, Association of Academic Radiology, Society of Interventional Radiology, American Society of Neuroradiology and the American Academy of Neurology, presented a code proposal requesting Category I CPT codes for intraosseous fiducial marker placement.

In addition, the radiological societies submitted new Category III codes for tissue displacement for safe displacement and protection of soft tissue structures and surface mesh volume. The surface mesh volume code proposal was withdrawn prior to consideration by the CPT Editorial Panel to allow ACR the opportunity to collaborate with additional specialty societies. Doing so allows for further refinement and improvement of the code proposal, with the expectation that it would increase the chances of approval at a future CPT Editorial Panel meeting

If approved, new Category III codes will be available Jan. 1, and Category I codes will be available Jan. 1, 2027.

For a list of anticipated radiology code changes for 2026, refer to the CPT 2026 Anticipated Code Changes. Awareness of anticipated 2026 codes will provide time to consider changes needed to update contracts for the coming year. The list of the new codes and descriptors pertinent to radiology will be available on the Coding Resources page in October.
