Read moreThe American College of Radiology® (ACR®) presented code proposals at the February 2024 American Medical Association (AMA) CPT® Editorial Panel meeting. ACR, American Roentgen Ray Society, Radiological Society of North America and the Association of University Radiologists, working in conjunction with the Society of Interventional Radiology, requested new and emerging technology Category III codes for placement of an implant for bone marrow sampling and code descriptor revisions to existing Category I codes 61624 and 61626 for endovascular therapy. They also requested the retention of:
• 0071T, 0072T- Focused ultrasound ablation of uterine leiomyomata.
• 0075T, 0076T- Transcatheter placement of extracranial vertebral artery stent(s).
• 0200T, 0201T- Percutaneous sacral augmentation (sacroplasty) injection.
• 0554T, 0555T, 0556T, 0557T- Bone strength and fracture risk using finite element analysis of functional data and bone-mineral density utilizing data from a computed tomography scan.
• 0558T- Computed tomography scan taken for the purpose of biomechanical computed tomography analysis.
• 0559T, 0560T, 0561T, 0562T- Anatomic model 3D-printed from image data set(s).
• 36835- Insertion of Thomas shunt.
• 61710- Surgery of aneurysm, vascular malformation or carotid-cavernous fistula; by intra-arterial embolization, injection procedure, or balloon catheter.
• 74355- Percutaneous placement of enteroclysis tube.
• 76145- Medical physics dose evaluation for radiation exposure that exceeds institutional review threshold.
The College was represented by Mark Alson, MD, FACR, RCC, and representatives of several radiology specialty societies, including Eric Rubin, MD, FACR, RCC; Timothy Crummy, MD, FACR, RCC; Dana Smetherman, MD, MPH, MBA, FACR; Shiva Gupta, MD; Cindy Yuan, MD, PhD; and Christina Marks, MD, CIRCC, with the assistance of ACR coding staff.
The hybrid meeting was the first of three meetings to update CPT codes for the 2026 CPT code cycle. If approved, the new Category III codes will be released early July 1 on the AMA’s website, with an effective date of Jan. 1. Revisions to the Category I codes will be effective Jan. 1, 2026.
