Read moreACR® supported a uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) outreach event July 22 at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC, as part of its Fibroid Awareness Month campaign. Modeled after the College-led Radiology Health Equity Coalition's (RHEC) Communities Crushing Cancer events, the program connected hospital visitors with information about fibroids and treatment options.
The event focused on increasing awareness of UFE as a minimally invasive treatment option. About 50 visitors stopped to learn more through conversations with volunteers and educational materials developed by the Fibroid Relief Empowerment Effort (FREE) Project Task Force and interventional radiologists.
Medical student volunteers engaged patients, caregivers and hospital staff in discussions about the impact of fibroids. One visitor who previously underwent UFE at MedStar Georgetown praised the procedure and described the treatment process as straightforward, saying her "$50 copay was the best $50" she had ever spent. A local pastor also expressed interest in sharing information with members of his congregation affected by fibroids.
The event underscored the value of community-centered education and outreach. Through programs such as Communities Crushing Cancer and the FREE Project, RHEC equips volunteers with trusted resources that help patients better understand their diagnosis, treatment options and next steps in care. By meeting people where they are and providing clear, accessible information, these efforts support informed decision-making and strengthen connections between patients and providers.
