A Medical Student’s First Annual Meeting
A medical student reflects on attending the ACR Annual Meeting, providing insights on advocacy, careers in radiology and how to get involved.
Read moreThe Radiology Health Equity Coalition (RHEC) recently partnered with the GZEP initiative in Washington DC to help young women learn about community health, health equity and careers in healthcare. The interactive program encouraged participants to become advocates for healthier, more equitable communities.
The program highlighted the important role radiology plays in diagnosing and monitoring medical conditions. Students explored how imaging tools such as X-rays, MRI scans, ultrasounds and CT scans help healthcare teams detect illness early and improve patient outcomes.
Participants discussed challenges that can delay access to imaging services, including transportation, childcare, scheduling conflicts, cost concerns and limited health information. Through team activities, they identified practical solutions such as mobile screening programs, transportation assistance and childcare support.
During the session, RHEC leaders explained how factors such as safe housing, quality education, transportation, access to healthy food and mental health support affect overall health. Participants also learned about health equity and the barriers that can make it harder for some people to get the care they need.
RHEC encouraged participants to support preventive screenings, advocate for community needs and explore careers in healthcare.
