ACR Supports REDI Act to Ease Student Loan Burden

ACR^® joined more than 40 physician, dental and healthcare organizations to urge Congress to advance the bipartisan Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) Act (S. 942/H.R. 2028). The legislation would allow physicians and dentists in accredited residency and internship programs to defer interest accrual on their federal student loans during required postgraduate training.

In a letter to leaders of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and U.S. House Committee on Education and Workforce, the coalition highlighted the significant educational debt many physicians carry into residency while earning modest salaries. The groups noted that interest continues to accrue during training, increasing loan balances before physicians can enter practice.

Recent changes to the federal student loan program increased financial pressures on medical students, and the REDI Act would provide targeted relief while helping strengthen the healthcare workforce. ACR will continue to advocate for policies that support physician training and improve patient access to care.
