ACR Seeks New CPT Codes at September Editorial Panel Meeting

ACR^®, the Radiological Society of North America, American Roentgen Ray Society, Association of Academic Radiology, Society of Interventional Radiology and American Society of Neuroradiology collaborated at the September AMA CPT^® Editorial Panel to request Current Procedural Terminology^® (CPT^®) Category I codes for breast tumor cryoablation, deep venous arterialization and central venous catheter insertion services. Amy L. Kotsenas, MD, FACR, the Secretary-Treasurer of the ACR Board of Chancellors, attended the Minneapolis meeting as a special local guest.

The radiology societies also requested Category III codes for a five-year AI-derived breast malignancy risk score based on screening mammography, as well as revisions to codes 0559T and 0560T for anatomical model 3D printing. The hybrid meeting was the last of three meetings held to update codes for the 2028 CPT code cycle.

If approved, the new Category III codes will become effective Jan. 1, and the Category I codes will become effective Jan. 1, 2028.

The AMA will release the Summary of Panel Actions outlining decisions made on each code application by Oct. 2.

For calendar year 2027, anticipated CPT changes are available on the ACR website. A finalized list of 2027 codes, including radiology-specific descriptions, will be published in the September/October 2026 issue of ACR Radiology Coding Source.
