Read moreACR® and several other radiological societies submitted code change proposals at the May 2026 AMA Current Procedure Terminology (CPT®) Editorial Panel meeting. The proposals sought revisions to current Category III codes 0721T and 0722T (Quantitative CT Tissue Characterization) and new Category III codes for AI Malignancy Risk Score from Medical Imaging Data. However, the Panel recommended resubmission of the applications at a later CPT meeting to allow further refinement. The hybrid meeting was the second of three meetings to update codes for the 2028 CPT code cycle.
ACR was led by Eric Rubin MD, FACR and Cindy Yuan, MD, PhD with two ACR Moorefield Fellows — Alex Huang, MD (Indiana) and Keenan Robbins, MBBS, MPHS (Missouri). The following coalition of radiology organizations represented at the meeting included Radiological Society of North America, American Roentgen Ray Society, Association of Academic Radiology, Society of Interventional Radiology, American Society of Neuroradiology, Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and the American Society for Radiation Oncology.
Radiology CPT advisors also met with other specialty societies and vendors and reviewed approximately 65 proposals submitted to the AMA, and commented on numerous proposals involving imaging that could affect radiologists.
For a list of all the anticipated radiology code changes for calendar year 2027, please refer to the CPT 2027 Anticipated Code Changes. Awareness of anticipated 2027codes will give you and your practice time to consider changes needed to update your contracts for the coming year. The list of the new codes and descriptors pertinent to radiology will be available on the Coding Resources website in October.
