ACR® joined dozens of physician and patient advocacy organizations in a letter to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services expressing concern about a proposed rule that would impose a new $103,265 fee on certain H-1B visa petitions. The coalition warned that the fee could make it harder for hospitals, physician practices and other healthcare employers to recruit international physicians, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

In the letter, the organizations noted that international medical graduates make up nearly one-quarter of the U.S. physician workforce and play a critical role in communities facing physician shortages. The groups argued that additional immigration-related costs and administrative barriers could further strain the healthcare workforce and reduce patient access to care.

The coalition urged the agencies to recognize physicians, dentists and medical trainees as serving a permanent national medical interest, exempt them from H-1B-related fees and restrictions, and continue efforts to streamline visa processing.
