Case in Point: Now Publishing Seven Days a Week

Claim even more Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits annually with Case in Point® (CiP) — now publishing cases seven days a week. CiP is an exclusive ACR member benefit that delivers world-class cases straight to your inbox. Explore popular topics by accessing the daily cases  on the ACR website and earn up to 91.25 CME annually by testing your clinical knowledge.

Check the Bulletin page in September 2023 for an in-depth interview with CiP Editor-in-Chief David R. Pettersson, MD, and Senior Editor Michael J. Opatowsky, MD, MBA, on the story behind CiP’s change to publishing seven days a week.

O-RADS MRI: A Primer for Lesion Characterization

The O-RADS™ MRI Education Subcommittee has produced an enduring educational activity to help learners recognize how to use the O-RADS MRI risk stratification system for adnexal lesion characterization in clinical practice. The O-RADS MRI Primer has six modules covering topics such as the MRI Lexicon/Atlas, Risk Score Stratification, MRI Techniques, Diagnostic Pearls and Pitfalls, Reporting and a Teaching Case Library.

At the end of some modules, viewers will be able to assess lessons learned in the provided knowledge checks and receive CME. The learning activity also provides access to additional resources to O-RADS MRI, such as a dictation template and guide to using the O-RADS MRI calculator.

New: CPI Gastrointestinal Tract Radiology Module 2023

A newly released self-assessment module will help you assess your gastrointestinal imaging knowledge and earn 8 CME. Part of the ACR Continuous Professional Improvement (CPI) program, the module  is available for purchase and features more than 160 multimodality imaging examples including CT, MRI, upper GI series and radiography.

Designed to be a teaching and learning tool for radiologists, subspecialists and residents, this module has 50 self-assessment questions to complete at your own pace that allows you to learn and earn CME at your convenience. Choose the print or online format and receive a complimentary digital (e-book) download.

Advance Your LCS Program with Lung-RADS® and the Lung Cancer Screening Registry

The ACR and the Society of Thoracic Radiology are bringing thoracic radiologists, other lung cancer screening (LCS) clinicians and administrative personnel a three-part webinar series titled “Advancing Your Lung Cancer Screening Program,” which covers tools designed to enhance an LCS program’s quality assurance and quality improvement efforts.

The series will highlight:

  • Changes to the ACR Lung-RADS® v2022 and the rationale for these updates, along with a case-based demonstration of their application.
  • Recent enhancements to the Lung Cancer Screening Registry (LCSR) that enable LCS programs to track new key performance indicators such as adherence of patients to annual screening.
  • Newly launched tools and resources supporting performance improvement initiatives using LCSR data.

Request for Input: New DXA Quality Measure

You are invited to share input by Aug. 25, 2023, on the first draft of the quality measure DXA: Improving Reporting of True Change in Bone Mineral Density. This measure focuses on improving the communication quality of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) reports. An online survey form  allows you to comment on the measure’s feasibility in practice, data capture and ability to measure the intended outcomes or actions.

2024 ACRF Global Humanitarian Award Application Open

The ACR Foundation’s Global Humanitarian Award recognizes outstanding individuals, organizations and programs working to improve access to and equitable delivery of quality radiological services to areas of need throughout the world. The World Health Organization  estimates that more than half of the world’s population lacks access to radiological services.

Deserving applicants will be awarded at ACR 2024 in Washington, DC. Awards are given in three categories: individuals, organizations (including nonprofit and industry groups) and non-radiologists (including medical physicists, RTs, ultrasonographers and other radiological personnel). Applications can be submitted online, and the deadline is Aug. 31, 2023.

In Memoriam: James E. Youker, MD, FACR

James E. “Jim” Youker, MD, FACR, former chair and professor emeritus of radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, passed away at age 94 on June 12, 2023, at Angel’s Grace Hospice in Oconomowoc, Wis. Youker’s life was one of service to the medical community, to the nation and to patients.

Born in Cooperstown, N.Y., Youker stayed in his home state for both his undergraduate degree from Colgate University and his medical doctorate from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine. His residency in radiology at the University of Minnesota was briefly put on hold for two years due to military service as chief of radiology at a U.S. naval hospital.

Following residency, Youker held positions at the Medical College of Virginia, at the University of California San Francisco and as a research fellow at the University of Lund in Sweden before accepting a position as chair of radiology for the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1968. Youker has been involved with the ACR since 1960, achieving his ACR Fellowship in 1973.

His obituary  in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called Youker talked about his influence, saying the children of several residents he trained grew to become radiology residents under his leadership. Among his numerous professional accomplishments, he held gold medals from the ACR, the Association of University Radiologists, the Radiological Society of North America and the American Roentgen Ray Society.

CPI Searches for Assistant Editors in Chief

The ACR Continuous Professional Improvement (CPI) program is recruiting two assistant editors in chief. The candidates will shadow the current CPI Program Chair and Editor in Chief, Harris L. Cohen, MD, FACR, in 2024. Starting in 2025, the candidates will act as the new editors, with the support of the current editor.

The candidates must have a passion for radiology education as well as peer review and editorial processes. They must review first drafts and printer proofs on a timely basis. They must be able to interact positively with CPI’s editor in chief, staff and faculty. Learn more and submit an application by Sept. 15, 2023.

Podcast Sheds Light on Incidental Findings in ED Imaging

A Bulletin podcast features Gregory Nicola, MD, FACR, and Christopher L. Moore, MD, discussing best practices for the follow-up of actionable incidental findings in ED imaging. The discussion emerged from a 15-member panel of experts convened in collaboration between the ACR and the American College of Emergency Physicians. Panel members included radiologists, emergency medicine physicians, patient advocates and healthcare administrators.

The podcast is a companion to a white paper  published in the JACR® that concentrated on four areas of best-practice consensus among the panel members: 1) report elements and structure; 2) communication of findings with patients; 3) communication of findings with clinicians; and 4) follow-up and tracking systems.
