ACR MSS Steering Committee Position Descriptions

The MSS Steering Committee is composed of the following officers: chair, vice chair, immediate past chair, resident advisor, secretary and five team leads (communications; diversity, equity, and inclusion; education; health innovation and technology; and humanities and bioethics). Steering Committee members are required to attend regularly scheduled (at a minimum quarterly) meetings as determined by the Chair. All positions are voting members except for the Immediate Past Chair.

Note: Applicants for all positions must be an active ACR member and classified as a Member-in-Training Medical Student or Transitional Year Member for the duration of the term in which they will serve. Additional eligibility requirements for select positions are included in the Position Descriptions below. Terms for incoming positions begin on June 1st and end on May 31st.

Chair

Serves as Medical Student Section (MSS) chair during the first year of the two-year Chair/Immediate Past Chair term. The Chair serves as the primary representative of the MSS and oversees all actions of the MSS including the Master calendar of events. The Chair will review and recommend candidates for the MSS Steering Committee to the Chair, ACR Commission on Membership and Communications.  In addition, the Chair serves as an appointed MSS representative to the ACR Commission on Membership and Communications. The Chair serves as a member of the Medical Student Scholarship Review Committee. The Chair leads all conference calls and meetings of the MSS Steering Committee, oversees the development of the MSS annual meeting agenda, and prepares (and if requested, presents) the MSS annual report for the ACR Annual Meeting. 

Eligibility Requirements: Prior service on the ACR MSS Steering Committee. It is recommended that the Chair attend the ACR annual meeting during their term of office. 

Vice-Chair

Appointed to a one-year term as vice chair. The Vice-Chair coordinates the activities of the MSS under the direction of the Chair as well as medical student volunteer opportunities including medical student appointments to the ACR Committees/Commissions and interacts with appointed medical student representatives throughout the year. In addition to these duties, the Vice-Chair is responsible for coordinating the MSS Annual Meeting programming.

Eligibility Requirements: Prior service on the ACR Medical Student Section Steering Committee is required. It is strongly recommended that the Vice Chair attend the ACR annual meeting during their term of office.

Immediate Past Chair

Serves a one-year term as an ex-officio member of the Steering Committee in an advisory role following year of service as the Chair of the MSS. The Immediate Past Chair serves as a member of the Medical Student Scholarship Review Committee. This position is not a voting member of the committee.

Resident Advisor

A member of the RFS Executive Committee who serves in an advisory capacity to the MSS. Responsibilities include attendance at MSS Steering Committee meetings, an understanding of the ACR governance structure and processes. The Resident Advisor acts in a mentorship capacity to educate and develop future leaders. The Resident Advisor also serves as a member of the Medical Student Scholarship Review Committee.

Secretary

Appointed to a one-year term. The Secretary coordinates the exchange of information among Steering Committee members, oversees the Pre-Radiology Radiology Advocacy Network (RAN) subcommittee and coordinates with ACR Staff on the development of the regular medical student content for the ACR Member Update newsletter. 
Eligibility requirements: Prior service on an ACR MSS Subcommittee is preferred.

Communications Liaison

Appointed to a one-year term. Responsibilities include coordinating with staff to promote MSS events and activities on social media and the MSS Engage Community, developing and updating content for the MSS website in conjunction with ACR staff, and maintaining the radiology interest group (RIG) roster and coordinating communication efforts with the RIG email contacts, and overseeing the Communications Subcommittee. 

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Liaison

Appointed to serve a one-year term. Responsibilities include creating opportunities to advance and promote diversity and inclusion within the MSS, developing educational programs that advance these values for medical students and overseeing the DEI Subcommittee.

Education Liaison

Appointed to a one-year term. Responsibilities include coordinating MSS educational programs ensuring that each aligns with the ACR Strategic Goals, evaluating existing programs and determining if they should continue or be sunset, working closely with the Chair to plan the MSS event calendar for the year, and overseeing the Education Subcommittee. 

Health Innovation and Technology Liaison

Appointed to a one-year term. Responsibilities include creating activities and content about advancements in medical imaging technologies including, but not limited to, artificial and augmented intelligence, augmented and virtual reality combined with 3D imaging, and new approaches to nuclear imaging, and overseeing the Health Innovation and Technology Subcommittee. 

Humanities and Bioethics Liaison

Appointed to a one-year term. Responsibilities include creating content about medical humanities, social science, and the arts and their application to the field of radiology and oversees the Humanities and Bioethics Subcommittee.
