The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the calendar year (CY) 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) final rule Nov. 2. The ACR has created this initial review of provisions within the final rule that impact radiology or radiation oncology.
Among other things, the rule begins the payment penalty phase of the Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) program on the latter of Jan. 1, 2023, or the Jan. 1 that follows the declared end of the COVID-19 public health emergency.
Despite objections from ACR and others, CMS chose to move forward with implementation of clinical labor pricing updates. However, due to the actions of ACR and others, the updates will be phased in over a four-year period, and the payment impact to radiology and radiation oncology providers largely reduced by half.
