Among the Medicare population from 2005–2020, Black women were less likely to have their breast screening exams performed with more advanced mammography technology, according to a study of over 4 million claims published in Radiology, a journal of the Radiological Society of North America.
The results found that Black women were 20% less likely than white women to receive digital mammography in 2005, and 16% less likely than white women to receive digital breast tomosynthesis from 2015–2020. The research was the work of the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute® (HPI) in collaboration with the Radiology Health Equity Coalition, an initiative of 10 major radiology organizations to positively impact healthcare equity.
