DICOE new logo 166ACR has just introduced the Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence™ (DICOE) program, which takes a department or practice to the next level of imaging efficiency, safety and quality care. The DICOE program is an achievement that goes beyond accreditation to recognize best-quality imaging practices and diagnostic care with a comprehensive assessment of the entire medical imaging enterprise, including structure and outcomes.

“The DICOE award reflects excellence at multiple levels — the professional staff, the technology and the policies and procedures the organization follows — but, ultimately, it represents superior patient care,” says Debra Monticciolo, MD, chair of the American College of Radiology Quality and Safety Commission. “The DICOE recognition is synonymous with exceptional performance and a commitment to the most rigorous standards in all phases of the medical imaging enterprise.”

In order to receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in all modalities they provide, and in which the ACR offers an accreditation program. Another requirement is to participate in the Dose Index Registry® and General Radiology Improvement Database, at least two National Radiology Data Registry (NRDR) databases, as well as Image Wisely® and Image Gently®.

Then, an onsite team (comprising a radiologist, a medical physicist and a radiologic technologist or ACR senior staff member) reviews all aspects of the facility’s operations, including:

  • Personnel
  • Equipment specifications
  • Outcomes measurement and quality control systems
  • Safety policies
  • Utilization reviews
  • Facility management
  • Patient outcomes
