Attendees from across the country gathered May 19–23 at the ACR 2018 Annual Meeting to gain vital education, advocate for the specialty and network with peers. The annual meeting featured leadership and practice management programming along with the activities of the ACR Council.
ACR 2018: Update on Practice Parameters and Technical Standards
The ACR Council considered a total of 44 resolutions at ACR 2018, including 27 ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards (PP & TS), approved by the Council, as well as 23 revised and four new documents. Five PP & TS documents were referred for further review.
The new ACR Practice Parameters include:
- ACR Practice Parameter for the Performance of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT)
- ACR/ASNR/SIR/SNIS Practice Parameter for the Performance of Endovascular Embolectomy and Revascularization in Acute Stroke
- ACR/ACNM Practice Parameter for the Performance of Fluorine-18 Fluciclovine-PET/CT for Recurrent Prostate Cancer
- ACR Practice Parameter for the Performance of Gallium-68 DOTATATE PET/CT Neuroendocrine Tumors
Several of the PP & TS were a result of collaborative efforts between the ACR and other medical societies, such as the Society of Interventional Radiology and the Society for Pediatric Radiology.
Adopted PP & TS Resolutions
At ACR 2018, Resolution 44 proposed that the physician qualification section of each PP & TS no longer require the performance of a specific number of procedures within a specified time period to demonstrate initial proficiency. It also proposed that — when numbers are incorporated into qualifications ― one alternate pathway be included so that all practice types can qualify successfully (e.g., small and rural).
In addition, Resolution 43 proposed the inclusion of community-based practice representatives on drafting committees. Adopted as policy for the Digest of Council Actions, Resolution 43 tasked the Commission on Quality and Safety to review the development of PP & TS as well as to oversee orientation and training of all those involved in the PP & TS process.
