On July 24, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)-eligible clinicians and groups are able to check online to see if they were determined “non-patient-facing” and/or “hospital-based” for the 2017 MIPS performance year.

Obtaining either of these special statuses allows program participants to automatically reweight (i.e., exempt) the Advancing Care Information (ACI) category of MIPS. Moreover, non-patient-facing clinicians and groups are given increased flexibility in the Improvement Activities category of the program.

The methodology used by CMS for determining non-patient-facing and hospital-based status is discussed in this January 2017 ACR Advocacy in Action article. Additional information regarding MIPS participation is available on the ACR Be MACRA Ready resources webpage.

Note that CMS’ new functionality also enables participants and groups to check other special statuses related to MIPS, including the “small practice,” “rural” and “Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA)” designations.

Use the CMS lookup tool.
