IMI Finds Most MCOs Use Financial Incentives to Recruit Providers

The importance of financial incentives to recruit and retain health care providers was evident in the results of the Institute for Medicaid Innovation’s (IMI’s) recently released Medicaid Managed Care Organization (MCO) survey report.

The survey, released in September at the Medicaid Health Plan of America (MHPA) Annual Conference, found that financial incentives were the primary mechanism used by 95% of all Medicaid MCOs to recruit and retain providers. The report also found that 44% of Medicaid MCOs contracted with accountable care organizations (ACOs) in 2018.

The findings of the 2019 IMI survey are based on 2018 Medicaid managed care data from 69% of all covered lives in Medicaid managed care.

Medicaid MCOs innovation was the focus of MHPA annual conference, September 18–20, in Washington, DC. The annual report to be released by IMI next year will include trends seen in Medicaid MCOs over three years.
