As of September 19, California SB 697 awaited the signature of Gov. Gavin Newsom after unanimous approvals in the state assembly and senate in September.
The scope-of-practice bill would modify the definition of “supervision” of physician assistants (PAs) during their performance of diagnostic imaging and other medical procedures to the following ways:
- Require adequate supervision as agreed to in the practice agreement
- Require that the physician and surgeon be available by telephone or other electronic communication method at the time the physician assistant examines the patient
- Allow the Physician Assistant Board to require the physical presence of a physician and surgeon as a term or condition of a PA’s reinstatement or probation
Newsom has until October 13 to sign or veto SB 697 along with hundreds of other bills in the final hours of the legislative session.
