On September 5, the American Medical Association (AMA) released updates to the 2019 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) Code set.
Numerous radiology codes and guideline revisions were implemented for 2019. They include codes for the injection procedure for knee arthrography, gastrostomy tube replacement, bundling for fine needle aspiration biopsy, dilation of urinary tract and peripherally inserted central venous catheter (PICC) codes.
Codes for breast MRI were updated to differentiate breast MRI without contrast from breast MRI with and without contrast, and breast MRI with and without contrast to include computer-aided detection (CAD) when it is performed.
New Category I codes are now available for contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), as well as the conversion of ultrasound elastography (USE) from Category III to Category I.
A new Category III code was created to report pulse-echo ultrasound bone mineral density analysis (BMD). The Category III code will enable services to more appropriately document and track this technology’s use.
The CPT code set is updated annually with input from practicing physicians, medical specialty societies including the American College of Radiology (ACR), and the greater health care community through the CPT Editorial Panel process. The new CPT codes will be available for reporting on January 1, 2019.
