Norman E. Sharpless, MD, was sworn in as new director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Oct. 17.
Sharpless was previously director of the NCI-designated Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Chapel Hill, NC, and the Wellcome Distinguished Professor in Cancer Research. His clinical emphasis was hematologic cancer treatment. He succeeds NCI Acting Director Douglas Lowy, MD, who will return to his former position as deputy director.
NCI is the primary source of cancer research and training and support for cancer researchers at the National Institutes of Health.
