ACR Presents 32 Codes at April RUC Meeting

The American College of Radiology (ACR) presented 32 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes for valuation at the April 2018 American Medical Association (AMA)/Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) meeting in Chicago. Time and value recommendations for the following code families were offered for the following procedural groups:

  • X-ray of the sinuses
  • X-ray of the skull
  • X-ray of the neck
  • X-ray of the pelvis
  • X-ray of the clavicle/shoulder
  • X-ray of the bone
  • X-ray of a surgical specimen
  • Ultrasound of the chest
  • CT of the lower extremity
  • CT of the spine
  • 3-D rendering

ACR RUC Advisor, Kurt Schoppe, MD, and Alternate Advisor, Daniel Wessell, MD, PhD, presented all 32 codes, with support from Lauren Golding, MD, and Andrew Moriarity, MD, on several families. Ezequiel Silva III, MD, FACR and William Donovan, MD, MPH participated in their capacities as radiology RUC panel member and alternate radiology RUC panel member, respectively.

Bibb Allen Jr., MD, FACR, Andrew Rosenkrantz, MD, and Timothy Crummy, MD, FACR also attended. Allen is a former ACR RUC advisor and radiology RUC panel member, Rosenkrantz will transition into the AUR RUC advisor position beginning October 2018, and Crummy is the current Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) CPT advisor.

As a first-time attendee, Crummy observed, “The CPT and RUC processes are both integral parts of establishing and valuing a CPT code. While both steps are necessary to achieve the ultimate goal, the processes and strategies are entirely different at each of these steps. All ACR members benefit from a very talented group of radiologist volunteers and ACR staff representing them at both steps.”

The ACR collaborated with the American Society of Neuroradiology, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Physicians on presentations for several code families.

The RUC-approved values are confidential, but will be shared with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for consideration and eventual implementation in the 2020 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. CMS may revise the values approved at the RUC meeting based on its own internal review.

The ACR greatly appreciates member participation in this important code valuation process. We will begin circulating RUC surveys for the October 2018 code families in June or July.
