pecial Awards Recognize ACR Economic Leaders

The American College of Radiology (ACR) acknowledged the importance of economics, procedural coding and valuation in awards presented May 16 at the 2016 ACR Annual Meeting.

Christopher G. Ullrich, MD, FACR received the William T. Thorwarth, Jr., MD Award. This honor was created in 2004 to recognize individuals who demonstrate outstanding contributions to the field of health policy and economics for radiology. Ullrich was honored for his leadership, integrity and diplomacy in varied roles.

Ullrich has worked tirelessly to advance the interests of radiology beginning with the North Carolina Radiological Society where he served as president from 1998 to 2000. On a national level, he has participated on numerous ACR committees and task forces lending guidance to the College’s interests in managed care, utilization management and government relations. He was most recently a member of the ACR Council Steering Committee. He continues to lend his expertise as a member of the Commission on Economics.

“Those of us in economics know Chris as a mentor,” said Geraldine McGinty, MD, FACR during award ceremonies. “He is someone who is always thinking ahead.”

McGinty was herself recognized with an ACR Service Award following election as the first woman vice-chair of the Board of Chancellors in ACR history. She has just completed a four-year term as chair of the ACR Commission on Economics. The Service Award celebrates her accomplishments on behalf of the College during 10 years of service on the Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) Advisory Committee (2006-2016) and RUC Panel (2012-2016).

In presenting McGinty the award, Bibb Allen, MD, FACR, immediate past chair of the ACR Board of Chancellors, and current ACR president, emphasized her pivotal role in redefining the role of radiology as economics commission chair and then concurrently applying those principles as a RUC member.

Richard A. Duszak, MD, FACR received an ACR Service Award for extensive service on behalf of the medical community. His credentials include:

  • Member (2001-2003) and Chair (2004-2007) of the Economics Committee on Coding & Nomenclature
  • Member of the AMA CPT Advisory Committee (2004-2007)
  • Member of the AMA CPT Editorial Panel (2008-2016)
  • Member of the Radiology Coding Certification Board (2001-2007).

At the awards ceremony, ACR Chief Executive Officer, William T. Thorwarth, Jr. MD, FACR expressed admiration for the strength of character that earned Duszak quick acceptance on the CPT Editorial Panel.

“You have to be recognized as deliberative, honest and fair to become one of only 11 appointed members on the panel,” Thorwarth said. “It is a testimony to how much respect Rich garnered as an advisor that he was invited to serve on the CPT panel’s executive committee in his first year.
