The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) requested Current Procedure Terminology (CPT®) codes at the recent May 2020 American Medical Association (AMA) CPT Editorial Panel Meeting. The meeting was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the second of three meetings to update codes for the 2022 CPT code cycle.
The ACR, led by Mark Alson, MD, FACR, RCC, and representatives of several radiology specialty societies presented code proposals to request Category III codes for new and emerging technologies to include percutaneous injection of allogenic injection of lumbar spine, automated advanced coronary analysis, and breast computed tomography. If approved, the new Category III codes will be released early on July 1, 2020, on the AMA’s website, with an effective date of Jan. 1, 2021.
For calendar year 2021, the anticipated radiology code changes are posted in the March/April 2020 ACR Radiology Coding Source™.
Note that specific code numbers have not been assigned. Wording will not be finalized until just prior to publication. The CPT 2021 data file with specific CPT code set information is scheduled for release by the AMA in Aug. 2020. Be sure to check the Sept./Oct.2020 issue of the ACR Radiology Coding Source for the complete, finalized list of 2021 codes with descriptors pertinent to radiology.
The ACR urges its members to review and consider how the code changes may impact their practices for the coming year.
