ACR Requests Anthem Coverage of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis

Private payer coverage of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) continues to be a high priority for the ACR’s Managed Care Committee and Network. While Medicare coverage of DBT is fairly consistent, private payer coverage has been an uphill battle.

The Commission on Breast Imaging and the Commission on Economics recently sent a letter to Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield requesting coverage of this important breast cancer screening tool. Anthem is a large payer, covering patients in 14 states around the country and a positive coverage decision would benefit thousands of women.

The ACR developed a resources page to assist members in approaching payers to request coverage of this important, lifesaving technology.

The ACR continues to work with payers at a national level to educate them on the merits of DBT and encourages members to use the available resources to approach local payers. For additional information, contact Katie Keysor at
