The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced provisions intended to ease the reporting burden for Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) clinicians who are affected by the ongoing COVID-19 national emergency.
Most immediately, CMS has extended the MIPS reporting deadline by one month, from March 31 to April 30, 2020.
In addition, CMS announced that the “extreme and uncontrollable circumstances” exemption will be applied to any MIPS-eligible clinicians who do not submit MIPS data before the deadline. This means that all non-reporting clinicians will automatically be exempted from the 2019 MIPS program and will receive a neutral payment adjustment rather than a negative adjustment.
CMS also stated in its March 22 news brief that it is considering relief provisions for the 2020 MIPS reporting year and for participation and submission related to the Medicare Shared Savings Program. The American College of Radiology® will provide updates as they become available.
