The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced on March 5, a second and final round of applications for the Next Generation Accountable Care Organization (ACO) Model as part of a Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) initiative for ACOs with experience in coordinating care for large patient populations.
The Next Generation ACO model will allow these provider groups to assume more financial risk and reward than are available with the current Pioneer Model and Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP).
As previously reported in Advocacy in Action, the initial round of the Next Generation ACO model was introduced in March 2015. Twenty-one ACOs currently participate in the program. The second round of Next Generation Model ACOs will start in January 2017.
